Making it easier for young people to eat Healthy Food in Shropshire

We’re developing a project to enable more young people in Shropshire to eat healthy food.  We’re through to the second stage of a Reaching Communities bid. We’d love to hear from young people with views about what needs to change and anyone involved in youth projects.

There is mounting evidence that young people are experiencing ill health due to poor diet and that campaigns such as “5-a-day” have had little traction.  Causes include low family income, lack of availability of well-priced fruit and veg, confidence in cooking skills and profit-driven promotion of ultra-processed food.

This youth-driven project will create a network of organisations collaborating to understand what needs to change, to develop and test solutions and to scale up by sharing learning. It will:

  • Engage young people in understanding the food system and health and identifying opportunities for change.

  • Support young people to develop solutions with a network of community groups, council, NHS and businesses.

  • Test solutions to make it easier for young people to move to healthier diets

    • in settings for young people (schools, youth groups, young farmers groups, scouts, guides and youth forums)

    • in 2 communities of place (Oswestry and Market Drayton tbc).

  • Evaluate what works, sharing learning and stories to build capacity and shift food culture.

  • Provide evidence to decision makers to encourage investment in healthier diets and to campaign for better policy.
