Farming in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape

The Shropshire Hills area is a beautiful part of our county and home to many excellent small farms and producers. We're thrilled to have several Shropshire Hills farmers taking part in the Shropshire Good Food Trail this year, and to showcase their work.

Read on to learn more about Muckleton Meats, Nanny Janny's Jersey Ice Cream and Augernik Farm.

Jan and David Morgan-Birtles have been running Muckleton Meats for nearly a decade alongside Nanny Janny’s Jersey Ice Cream from their small farm near the Stiperstones. They have a small herd of Jersey cattle, along with mixed breed pigs. They hold to the highest standards of animal welfare and food hygiene, and have won awards for their dry cured bacon.

Talking to Jan is a real pleasure. You really get a sense of why small is beautiful in this type of farming. The animals are loved, with generations of animals enjoying a beautiful life on their farm. Their business is their home, with a traditional but modernised milking shed tucked in the rolling hills with happy cows, pigs and hens. Most of their customers return week after week because they know that the quality comes from good care and management approaches.

They sell primarily at local markets, including Local to Ludlow (Thursday), Lydham Friday Market, Shrewsbury Farmers' market and Stone Farmers' market

Find Jan on 1st September, serving ice cream at Longden Dog Show and, on 15th September at the Ludlow Food Festival in the Slow Food area with meat and ice cream.

You can find Muckleton Meats served at both the Stiperstones Inn and the Castle Hotel (in Bishops Castle), and you can visit The White Horse at Pulverbatch for Nanny Janny’s Jersey ice cream.

Thank you to Jan for the tour of the farm and the cow cuddles!

Billy Auger runs Augernik Farm with his wife Liz, growing organic fruit & nuts on 25 acres.

You’ll find Billy at local markets, marking the different points of the growing season through his produce, from the first Rhubarb, to Walnuts and Chestnuts in the autumn. In between, he’s a great source of Gooseberries, Raspberries, Cherries, Plums, Apples, Pears Greengages, Damsons, Mirabelles, Autumn Raspberries, and Cobnuts (hazelnuts).

Billy’s is a business where the change of climate is truly being felt, with the variability in weather having potentially big impacts on his production. Thankfully, this is where a small scale, diverse operation has an edge - a range of different fruits and nuts act to some extent as a buffer… if one thing doesn’t do well, others will hopefully make up for it. This is one of the great things about perennial cropping systems.

You will find the best of the season’s fruits and nuts from Augernik Farm at the following Markets, depending on availability: Local to Ludlow Market, Leominster, Moseley Farmer’s Market, Lydham Market and others. Billy offers Pick Your Own at the farm when specific crops are ready (follow him on social media or contact him for details).

It’s worth seeking him out - Billy is a library of knowledge on fruit trees, and will generously give his time to share his considerable experience gleaned from years in the horticulture industry.
